The Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital is open around-the-clock to serve adults and children from northern Manhattan, Riverdale, and other parts of the Bronx who need immediate medical attention. Our dedicated physicians and nurses combine skill, experience, and compassion to provide outstanding care in a setting that is comfortable for you and your loved ones. We deliver emergency care to more than 40,000 patients a year, offering:
Stroke Treatment
Allen Hospital is a New York State-designated Primary Stroke Center. We provide immediate care if you or a loved one has had a stroke. Our hospital has received the Get with the Guidelines®-Gold Plus Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke. We also received the associations' Target Stroke Elite Honor Roll for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-busting drug tPA. If you receive this drug within three hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, you may recover more quickly and are less likely to suffer severe disability.
Chest Pain Center
The Society for Chest Pain Centers has designated Allen Hospital as a Chest Pain Center. Our staff quickly assesses chest pain and provides effective therapy if you are at risk for having a heart attack. If you need angioplasty and/or the insertion of a stent (a small mesh tube that holds open a narrowed or blocked blood vessel) or if you need heart surgery, we'll refer you to NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center.
"Fast Track" Area
We care for patients with less urgent medical problems in our Fast Track Area. Here you can be treated and released home more quickly. This also helps our staff focus on other patients with more urgent medical needs.
Obstetric/Gynecology Rooms
Women who require immediate care for pregnancy-related or gynecological (reproductive) problems may receive treatment in one of two special rooms.
Asthma Room
People with asthma have specific medical needs. The Emergency Department features a room that is specially equipped to meet these needs.
Trauma Room
Patients who have experienced severe trauma receive care in a special Trauma Room. This room has advanced equipment and is located very close to the bay where ambulances bring in patients, making immediate care possible.
Bio-Terrorism Decontamination Facility
If you've been exposed to an infectious or toxic substance, you can receive special care in a designated decontamination area.
Access to Other Specialists
If you come to our Emergency Department, you'll also have access to other specialists at Allen Hospital, as needed. These include neurologists (doctors who treat stroke and other disorders of the brain and the rest of the nervous system), orthopedists (who treat problems of the muscles and bones), general surgeons, obstetrician/gynecologists (who deliver babies and care for women's reproductive needs), and neonatologists (doctors with special training in the care of newborn babies). Children who require more involved care or who need to be admitted to the hospital are transferred to the Alexandra & Steven Cohen Children's Emergency Department of NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.
Our Physicians
All physicians at Allen Hospital are also on the staff of NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of our physicians is a member of the highly regarded ColumbiaDoctors faculty practice. You can experience the level of exceptional care expected from NewYork-Presbyterian in a personal and accessible environment.
