Anesthesiologists at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital offer round-the-clock anesthesia services to ensure comfort and safety during surgery and labor and delivery. Our anesthesiologists are board-certified, and many have additional expertise and training in providing anesthesia for specific types of surgery, as well as pain control during labor and delivery. Our team includes anesthesiologists with specialty training in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Vascular Surgery, Urology, ENT, Podiatry, Spine Surgery (including nerve monitoring and EEG), and Gynecology.
Outpatient Surgical Care
Many surgical procedures at NYP Allen are performed on an outpatient basis. All of our anesthesiologists have ample experience using special anesthetic techniques that allow patients to be discharged early and safely, with minimal interruption of their daily routines.
The Anesthesia Team
In all operative cases, our anesthesiologists collaborate with certified registered nurse anesthetists. This is known in professional circles as the Anesthesia Care Team model.
The Latest Anesthesia Technologies
As part of a major academic medical center and in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, NYP Allen also trains student registered nurse anesthetists from Columbia University's School of Nursing. This ongoing educational involvement ensures that our care is of the highest caliber, and that our technology is the latest available. Our newest technologies include:
- Glidescope, a tube with a tiny video camera at the end that provides a clear, real-time view of the patient's airway, enabling fast and accurate placement of a breathing tube into the patient's airway to enable breathing.
- State-of-the-art GE Logiq and Philips CX 50 Ultrasound to guide the placement of peripheral nerve blocks for different types of surgical procedures. These allow the physician to specifically anesthetize one extremity at a time without the need for general anesthesia for complicated and extended surgeries. Our patients benefit from a faster recovery and superior pain control after surgery. Most of these operations can be done on an outpatient basis.
- Fiberoptic intubation devices to manage all types of emergency and non-emergency endotracheal intubations.
- Rapid infuser devices that permit the fast and safe replacement of intravascular volume and transfusion therapy in cases of trauma, major surgery, and obstetric procedures associated with large amounts of blood loss.
Anesthesia During Labor And Delivery
At NYP Allen, anesthesiologists work with obstetricians and certified nurse midwives to address each woman's desired level of pain control. We offer a full range of anesthesia services, including both traditional epidurals and more recent innovations such as combined spinal/epidural techniques, and spinal opioids for post-Cesarean section pain. Epidural services are provided only at the request of each patient and her obstetric caregiver.
Our Physicians
All physicians at NYP Allen are also on the staff of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. In addition, each of our physicians is a member of the highly regarded ColumbiaDoctors faculty practice. This means that patients experience the level of exceptional care expected from NewYork-Presbyterian in a personal and accessible environment.
