What is WIC?

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Ambulatory Care Network's WIC Program is a federal and state-funded nutrition education and supplemental food program. The WIC Program provides nutrition, health, fitness, and breastfeeding information as well as monthly checks for nutritious foods to eligible participants.

 

Who is Eligible?

Pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women and children up to age 5 who meet the medical, nutritional, residential and income requirements are eligible. You will need to bring the following items for your first appointment:

  1. Your child(ren), proof of address (rent receipt, utility bill, etc.);
  2. Proof of income (pay stub, unemployment benefits, etc. ) for everyone in your household
  3. Proof of identity (birth certificates and immunization records for each person applying for benefits)
  4. completed WIC medical referral form, available at your health center or from a WIC office.

You do not have to prove legal residency, be a U.S. citizen, or have a social security card.

You are eligible even if you or members of your household work, you receive food stamps, TANF, or Medicaid, or you have an F-1 foreign student visa.

What will I receive?

You will receive information on nutrition, wellness, fitness, breastfeeding, farmers market, and how to access other services you or your child may need.

You will receive nutritious foods like milk, cheese, 100% juice, eggs, cereal, peanut butter, whole grains (bread, rice, tortillas), dried beans and peas, canned fish (for exclusively breastfeeding mothers), fruits and vegetables, infant formula, infant cereal, baby food meats (for exclusively breastfed infants), baby fruits and vegetables.

 

Breastfeeding Services

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Ambulatory Care Network's WIC Program offers extensive breastfeeding education and assistance. Each site provides breastfeeding education through its nutrition and peer counseling staff.

Pechita's Café, located at 549 W. 180th Street, provides a meeting place for pregnant and breastfeeding women who would like to gather in a more informal setting. The café is open to the community every Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30pm. No appointment is necessary. Not required to be a WIC participant. Come join us for conversation, assistance, support, and refreshments.

The Breastfeeding Center, located at 549 W. 180th Street, 2nd Floor, provides one-on-one breastfeeding assistance as well as breastfeeding aids such as breast pumps, nipple shields, breast shells, etc., for WIC participants. The Center provides free monthly rentals of hospital-grade breast pumps for infants in the NICU or who, for some reason, cannot feed at the breast.
