Rehabilitation Medicine
The Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital are among the leading programs in the United States in clinical care and research. We provide patients who have suffered illness or injury with specialized rehabilitative therapy to help them regain function and return to everyday life. Such therapy is highly individualized to each patient's condition and, therefore, is based on a thorough evaluation and periodic re-evaluation. Our approach focuses not only on the patient's physical needs but also on the emotional challenges of learning to cope with the rehabilitation process and changed abilities.
The Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine specialize in the non-surgical management of musculoskeletal and neurologic disorders and are recognized as one of the nation's leaders in lumbar spine care. We treat patients with a range of disorders and diseases, including neurological conditions such as stroke and movement disorders, back and shoulder conditions, sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain, and cancer rehabilitation.
Our multi-disciplinary teams of rehabilitation specialists coordinate diagnostic testing and the prescription of treatments and devices for each patient. For both in- and outpatients, the most significant time may be spent with physical and occupational therapists who help them learn how to regain their individual lifestyle. Depending on each patient's needs, this team may also include: physiatrists; rehabilitation nurses; physical, occupational and recreational therapists; speech and language pathologists; orthotists and prosthetists; and social workers. In addition, we offer a wide range of complementary medicine techniques, including acupuncture, hypnosis, and biofeedback.
