Nephrology (Kidney Disease)
Patients with complex kidney diseases and urologic conditions can find the full range of treatment options at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In fact, our nephrology program ranked #2 in the nation in the 2009-2010U.S.News and World Report America's Best Hospitals Survey.
Nephrologists in the Divisions of Nephrology work closely with the Departments or Surgery for kidney transplantations. The kidney transplantation program offers pre- and post-transplant counseling for patients and family members, as well as the latest therapies are used to help reduce the side effects of anti-rejection drugs.
Renal services at the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center include consultation, acute and chronic dialysis, apheresis, and continuous renal replacement therapy. Each year the Division handles between 300 and 400 renal consults, 8000 to 9000 hemodialysis procedures, and medical care for 90 to 100 renal transplants. The primary focus of the Division is transplantation immunology and molecular biology. Physicians here examine the mechanisms of action of immunosuppressive drugs used in transplant recipients, tests to guide drug therapy of transplant patients, and treatment strategies to protect the transplanted organ.
At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, clinical services in the Division of Nephrology include transplantation services, acute hemodialysis, and chronic hemodialysis, which is offered in a new state-of-the-art chronic dialysis facility. In addition, every Tuesday morning the Division hosts The Nephritis Hypertension Clinic, the first specialty clinic of its kind in the United States.
