Anesthesiology

Anesthesiologists are physician specialists and essential members of the surgical team. These physicians ensure comfort and safety during surgery and make informed medical judgments regarding critical life functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood. Anesthesiologists also immediately diagnose and treat medical problems that arise during surgery or recovery.

The Departments of Anesthesiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center have board-certified anesthesiologists on hand for every surgery. Every anesthesiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has received extensive training in all areas of anesthesiology, and many staff members have additional expertise and training in providing anesthesia for specific types of surgery, as well as pain control during labor and delivery.

Both Departments have multiple Divisions for addressing specific types of surgery, such as cardiac, orthopaedic, thoracic, vascular, neurological, obstetric, and pediatric surgery. In addition, the Department of Anesthesiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia directs the combined Surgical and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units, as well as the Recovery Rooms, emphasizing the role of the anesthesiologists throughout the perioperative period.

Both Departments also feature centers for the treatment of chronic pain. The Pain Management Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia has been in existence for over thirty years. The Center offers treatment for acute pain; chronic pain; pain associated with cancer; and oral, facial, and head pain. The state-of-the-art care includes the most recent technology and interdisciplinary pain management services.

The Pain Medicine Center of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell manages a busy outpatient center for patients with chronic pain and pain associated with cancer. Many advanced techniques are used, including interventional pain management, nerve blocks, radiofrequency, spinal cord stimulator implants, spinal injections, and spinal opiate catheter implants.
