NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital was established in 1997 by the merger of The New York Hospital and The Presbyterian Hospital, combining two world-class academic healthcare institutions with long and distinguished histories. The New York Hospital, the oldest hospital in New York City, and the second oldest hospital in the country, was founded in 1771 by a Royal Charter granted by King George III of England. The Presbyterian Hospital was founded in 1869 by James Lenox, a prominent New Yorker devoted to public and private philanthropy. As a merged institution, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital continues a tradition of providing high-quality, comprehensive and patient-centered care. Ranked sixth on the most recent U.S. News & World Report's Guide to "America's Best Hospitals", NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is recognized as one of the foremost university hospitals in the world and is the top-ranked hospital in New York State.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has several specialty areas of excellence which provide clinical care and research benefiting not only the residents of the New York City metropolitan region, but patients from other parts of the country and around the world. Among them are: AIDS care, behavioral health, burn center, cancer care, cardiac care, children's health, digestive diseases, geriatric care, neurological care, transplant medicine and women's health. The Hospital's faculty combine active clinical practice with pioneering research, which means that future health professionals receive the finest education available, and patients are offered up-to-date medical expertise.

To help meet the needs of residents throughout the metropolitan area, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has developed the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, which serves residents of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, as well as Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and several upstate New York counties. Members of the System include acute care and community hospitals, continuum-of-care facilities, home health agencies, ambulatory sites, and specialty institutes committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective and conveniently accessible care to the communities they serve. The NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System is the largest New York metropolitan health care provider, serving one in four patients.
