NewYork-Presbyterian has launched Digital Urgent Care and Virtual Visit, two new online services connecting patients with NYP providers, which includes ColumbiaDoctors, Weill Cornell Medicine’s Physician Organization and NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Groups, through real-time video. The services are available on www.nyp.org and through the NYP mobile app (mobileapp.nyp.org). Digital Urgent Care and Virtual Visit are the latest offerings from NYP OnDemand, a comprehensive suite of digital health services designed to improve and expand patient care.

“This is a significant next step in helping patients take better control of their healthcare, with the ease and convenience of virtual, on-the-go communication with NewYork-Presbyterian’s expert clinicians,” said Daniel Barchi, chief information officer of NewYork-Presbyterian. “We are very excited to roll out these innovative care options through our NYP App.”

Digital Urgent Care enables adults to instantly connect to a NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center emergency room physician for any minor illness, such as a sore throat, allergies and flu-like symptoms. Available on both the NewYork-Presbyterian website and mobile app, patients can speak directly to a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physicians via a high-definition video-conference connection. The doctor will then assess the patient and determine if treatment can be addressed without need for an in-person visit. If the patient does not need to travel to the hospital or a doctor’s office, the physician will advise on treatment and can prescribe medication if necessary. The service today covers patients located in New York State, with plans to expand coverage in the coming months to New Jersey, Connecticut, and Florida.

Virtual Visit provides existing NewYork-Presbyterian patients a virtual visit option, offering patients a more convenient way to access care without another trip to their doctor. Patients can see and speak with their provider remotely through a secure, live video-conference through their home computer or mobile device. The service can be used for a variety of patient follow-up needs across the continuum of care, including a pre-op consultation with an anesthesiologist for patients with upcoming surgeries, virtual psychiatry appointments for existing psychiatry patients, and hospitalist visits for discharged patients with a high risk of re-admission. This service can also be utilized for many types of routine follow up appointments, allowing the clinician to visually examine and exchange information with their patient quickly and conveniently.

“Mobile technology is revolutionizing how we define and offer patient care,” said Dr. Peter Fleischut, chief innovation officer at NewYork-Presbyterian. “With Digital Urgent Care and Virtual Visit, patients will have the ease and flexibility of accessing care from a location that is convenient to them. These services – along with NYP OnDemand’s entire suite of services – will greatly improve communication between clinicians, patients and caregivers in a dependable, seamless way.”

Through the new NYP App, patients will now have access to the full NYP OnDemand service line including Second Opinion, Digital Urgent Care and Virtual Visit. The newly released version of the application contains a “Doctors” feature that allows users to search and save their physicians from NewYork-Presbyterian. This feature will enable patients to view a complete list of their clinicians right from their phone, conveniently centralizing this information. Patients can also use digitized, interactive visitor guides for hospital campuses to prepare for their care both before and during their stay. Patients and visitors to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center will also receive messages about hospital amenities and neighborhood shops, increasing awareness and access to these opportunities.  The app also offers online tools where patients can securely access their medical records, pay their bill and view campus specific information on clinical services, nearby restaurants, pharmacies, directions and parking. The NYP App is currently available for the IPhone and compatible with both iOS 9 and iOS 10 operating systems.

The NYP OnDemand suite of services was developed by NewYork-Presbyterian, together with ColumbiaDoctors and Weill Cornell Medicine, to deliver both clinician- and consumer-facing solutions to enhance care delivery. It extends access to the clinical expertise of NewYork-Presbyterian’s physicians to their peers throughout the Hospital’s vast healthcare network. NewYork-Presbyterian is one of the leading medical institutions in the nation and the only one on this scale to implement an enterprise-wide, comprehensive digital health portfolio.

All patient information and virtual visits with a doctor are private, secure and HIPAA compliant. For more information, please visit the NewYork-Presbyterian Innovation Center at innovatenyp.org/nypapp.
