When A Sexual Assault Occurs

If you or someone you care about is sexually assaulted, there is help. After an assault, the following steps can make a difference:

• Do not shower, douche, or change clothes. Doing so may compromise the collection of valuable physical evidence that may aid in a criminal prosecution.

• Get medical help. It is important to treat any injuries, prevent infection or pregnancy, and have medical evidence in case you prosecute.

• The decision to report to assault to the police will be discussed with you. Whether you decide to report the crime or not, counselors are available to help you with this decision.
