Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) enhances the early detection and treatment of cancers and precancerous conditions. A special, small microscope is used to view and analyze cells in the digestive tract to determine if they are normal or precancerous. Cancerous tissue that is found may be immediately removed through the endoscope for further examination. In some cases, the detection of cancer cells is a reason for a patient to have surgery.
