Nicole, an aspiring dancer from Mississippi, came to New York to be a professional performer. When she returned home after an audition, Nicole found herself locked out of her apartment. She tried to find a way in by climbing to the roof of her building and entering through a window. She fell six stories to the alleyway below. Nicole broke her neck, back, pelvis, ribs, and punctured her lung. She wasn’t found until the next day. Nicole remembers waking up in the hospital. “The staff at NewYork-Presbyterian motivated me to get better by celebrating every step in my recovery. They didn’t invest in a patient—they invested in me.”
