Dawn Flemming

Dawn was 24 weeks pregnant when she went for her first sonogram. What should have been a joyous occasion quickly turned dire. Doctors at her local hospital told her that her baby had a huge tumor enveloping its neck. They told her that there was no hope and that she should prepare herself to abort the fetus or the baby would die on delivery. Dawn couldn’t accept that and took matters into her own hands and sought a second opinion at NewYork-Presbyterian. At her first meeting with the team, they talked of a special procedure, known as the exit procedure. The baby would be delivered by C-section and while still attached to the placenta, tiny breathing tubes would be inserted. Once the baby is able to breathe on its own, the umbilical cord would be detached. The procedure was successful, and five days later the tumor was removed. As you can see, mother and baby Jade are doing just fine.
