Diabetes Awareness Day at NYM

New York Methodist Hospital will host a Diabetes Awareness Day on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Medical Office Pavilion, 263 Seventh Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets. The free event will feature blood pressure and foot screenings, and dental counseling. Nutrition and diabetes education information will also be available.

Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the fifth leading cause of death in New York City. In Brooklyn, it is the fourth leading cause behind heart disease, cancer, pneumonia and flu.

At NYM, health care professionals associated with the Hospital's Diabetes Education and Resource Center aim to educate and empower patients to achieve the major objective of treatment for diabetes: the maintenance of normal blood sugar levels. Because tight control of blood sugar can minimize the complications associated with diabetes, specialists at NYM help patients to maintain control while they continue to enjoy a high quality of life.

In addition to the Diabetes Education and Resource Center, the Hospital offers the following programs and services as part of the Hospital's Institute for Diabetes and Other Endocrine Disorders:

- Pediatric Endocrinology Program

- Thyroid and Parathyroid Disorders Program

- Reproductive Endocrinology Program

- Menopause and Osteoporosis Program

- Pituitary Disease Program

Obesity Management and the Surgical Weight Reduction Program
