What are your time commitments?
The minimum time commitment is 4 hours a week for a total of 150 hours of service (approximately 6 months of service). You must be able to commit to coming in on a weekly basis. For Summer Volunteers the commitment is 15 hours per week for 8 weeks.
How old must I be?
The minimum age to volunteer directly with patients is 18 years of age. There are limited clerical opportunities for volunteers under the age of 18.
If I volunteer will I get a job at the hospital?
Volunteering at the hospital does not guarantee employment.
What is the Process?
Once your application is received, it is reviewed and assessed. If we have an opening for the time, day, and program you are interested in, we will contact you to set up an interview. After the interview process, you will have a medical screening provided by the hospital at no cost. You will attend a 2 hour Volunteer Services Department orientation. You will then contact the volunteer coordinator to discuss placement and be assigned a supervisor. You will contact the supervisor and set up an interview. Once these steps are completed, you are ready to begin.
How long does it take to be processed?
On average, it takes 4-8 weeks to be completely processed and ready to volunteer.
Is there a dress code?
Yes. Volunteers are not allowed to wear blue jeans, sweatpants, sweatshirts open toe shoes, t-shirts or shorts. All volunteers are required to purchase a smock ($10) that they must wear over their clothing while volunteering.
Can I volunteer just for the summer?
Yes. Summer volunteers must commit to a minimum of 120 hours within 6-10 weeks. Summer applications are due by March 31st.
Will I be able to shadow a Doctor and or have a clinical experience?
No. We do not offer shadowing or clinical experiences through the volunteer office.
Do you have research positions available?
No. Research positions are not offered through NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's Volunteer Services Department.
How long do you keep applications?
Applications are held for three months only. If you do not complete the process within three months your application will be discarded (unless otherwise approved by the volunteer department).
