Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is defined as the physical, sexual and/or emotional mistreatment, neglect, or financial exploitation of an adult 60 years of age or older.Ê The older adult may or may not be physically or mentally impaired. Elder abuse is greatly under reported to the authorities. Men and women are both victims of elder abuse. In New York State there is no mandated reporting of elder abuse. In other states you should call the local Department of Aging, to learn the status of mandated reporting and local resources.Ê The following is a general list of signs and symptoms to help you identify elder abuse.

Types of Elder Abuse

  • Physical - including hitting, pushing, or shaking
  • Emotional - including harassment or intimidation
  • Financial - including cons and scams or thefts of monthly checks

Signs & Symptoms of Elder Abuse

  • The sudden inability to pay bills, buy food or medicine
  • Unexplained injuries or bruises
  • Changes in mood, depression, or tiredness
  • Lack of contact with family and friends
