Weight Loss Surgery

(Description for photo)
Lap-Band Procedure

Weight loss surgery is also known as bariatric surgery. The term "bariatric" originates from the Greek words baros, meaning weight, and iatros, meaning medical treatment. Although bariatric surgery has been performed for many years, the approaches to this type of treatment have evolved dramatically since the days of the "stomach stapling" operations.

About Our Centers

The Bariatric Surgery Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center have been recognized by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as Centers of Excellence for bariatric and weight loss surgery. Both centers hold 1A designation status from the ACS – the highest of five designated levels – for providing complete specialized care for all patients, including those with the most challenging and complex conditions.

Laparoscopic Approach

At NewYork-Presbyterian, all of the bariatric surgeries we offer can be performed laparoscopically, resulting in less pain, quicker recovery times, fewer post-operative complications (such as hernia and wound infection), and a better cosmetic result than traditional, open approaches.

While the laparoscopic surgical approach is generally preferable, it is important to remember that in some cases the best treatment option for you might be the traditional, open surgery. Our surgeons have extensive experience in both types of bariatric surgery, and will develop a customized treatment plan that is best for you.
