Weill Cornell Cancer Center

Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

The Weill Cornell Tumor Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center is one of the country's most innovative and comprehensive brain tumor specialty programs. The Center is part of the Weill Cornell Cancer Center, offering excellent patient care and conducting leading medical research in a variety of specialized programs.

Created in 2002, Weill Cornell Brain Tumor Center provides a truly multidisciplinary approach to brain tumor treatment and care in a warm, compassionate environment. Hundreds of adult and pediatric patients each year are treated for the care of malignant brain tumors, such as
  • glioblastoma multiforme
  • medulloblastoma
  • anaplastic astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas
  • brain metastases
  • benign central nervous system tumors such as acoustic neuromas and meningiomas

Our team includes experts in neuro-oncology, neurological surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, neuroradiology, and neuropathology. In addition, consultation is available for management of seizures and other neurological symptoms, pain management, neuro-ophthalmology, psychology/psychiatry, physical therapy/rehabilitation, social work, nutrition, palliative care, and general medical care.

Particularly for children, the multidisciplinary approach has a primary goal to successfully treat the tumor while maximizing the potential for a normal transition to adulthood. Our team works closely with the Weill Cornell Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine program to explore ways of improving quality of life

A full spectrum of brain tumor treatment options is available at the Weill Cornell Brain Tumor Center, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Our Department of Neurological Surgery has worked with Cornell's School of Hotel Administration to create a "hospitality team" to provide a calm and secure environment. Our goal is to keep patients as comfortable as possible and to focus on maintaining their quality of life.

We also feature a robust translational research program designed to comprehend the complexity of brain tumors in an effort to identify potential new targets for therapy, especially for tumors that cannot be safely removed surgically. In addition, our neurosurgeons are working with biomedical engineers and biochemists to create new delivery techniques for brain tumor therapies.
