Incidence And Clinical Significance Of Lymph Node Metastasis Detected By Cytokeratin Immunohistochemical Staining In Ductal Carcinoma In Situ.
Mahmoud El-Tamer, MD
Published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology in 2004, and presented at the Society of Surgical Oncology's 57th Annual Cancer Symposium
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and cytokeratin immunohistochemical stains (CK-IHC) are innovative techniques that determine whether or not breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. This study explored the long-term prognosis of patients with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) and found that the incidence of positive nodes detected by CK-IHC did not affect survival in DCIS patients. These results raise important implications regarding the clinical significance of positive nodes detected by CK-IHC in DCIS patients.
A Novel Therapeutic Approach To DCIS
Robert Fine, MD
Virtually all breast cancer starts in the ducts of the breast. This is called Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS). From there, it grows out of the ducts and begins to advance to other areas of the breast. This study investigates a highly innovative agent which selectively kills cancer cells without aggressive treatment and therapy. This project involves the use of ductal lavage to directly inject the peptide agent into the breast ductal network to selectively kill early breast cancer cells like DCIS. This agent can potentially prevent cancer cells from growing by treating DCIS patients before they develop breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Survival In Relation To Brca1 And Brca2 Gene Status
Donna Russo, MS and Mahmoud El-Tamer, MD
Published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology in 2004, and presented at the Society of Surgical Oncology's 56th Annual Cancer Symposium This study investigated the differences in breast cancer mortality and recurrences among Ashkenazi Jewish women with BRCA-associated genetic mutations and women without BRCA breast cancer status. The results indicated no differences in prognosis for women who carried the mutation (11%) versus the non-mutation carriers. This study enhances our understanding of long-term survival in women with inherited BRCA mutations and raises our hopes of finding the optimal treatment, surgical and medical management of women with BRCA1, 2 mutations.
Pilot Study On The Effect Of Acupuncture On Joint Pain Induced By Aromatase Inhibitors In Breast Cancer Patients
Dawn Hershman, MD
Results of this pilot study will be used as preliminary data for a larger prospective trial.
