Women At Risk
Advocacy
We Are Resilient
Women At Risk is committed to directly influencing the lives of individuals affected by breast cancer. Advocacy, at the local, state and national level, is one important method for bringing about serious change when it comes to breast cancer and other women’s health issues. WAR's Advocacy Program, "We Are Resilient," brings together a grassroots network of patients, survivors, high-risk women, family members, friends, medical professionals, and other individuals in the New York Metropolitan Area who have been affected by breast cancer and are ready to affect change.
Women At Risk’s priorities are:
Research
WAR believes that comprehensive research studies are the only true method for ending breast cancer. Oftentimes, truly innovative research projects are labeled "too risky" and are not able to survive. WAR fills a need in the field by providing seed money to innovative researchers whose ideas may become the next big breakthroughs. Other research initiatives include:
- The High-Risk Registry - WAR recognizes that addressing risk is the most effective way to reduce breast cancer incidence and mortality rates. The High-Risk Registry provides invaluable data on high-risk women that researchers may access.
- Participation in the Peer Review Process - WAR Advocates sit on the peer review panel for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program. Advocates represent the consumer perspective throughout the scientific review process.
- Support for the $150 million Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research Program - Each year, WAR joins other organizations in urging Senators and Congressmen to renew this needed funding.
- Clinical Trials - WAR makes every effort to link all patients and high-risk women participating in its programs to clinical trials they may be eligible to participate in.
Education
Based on the concept that knowledge is empowering, WAR seeks to educate both the public and elected officials on the specific issues facing women and families affected by breast cancer.
Support
WAR believes that all women facing an elevated risk or diagnosis of breast cancer deserve access to quality resources and support. Through Patient Navigation, a Resource Library and Support Groups, WAR helps provide this necessary support.
Access to Quality Health Care
Breast cancer cannot be eradicated, prevented or treated properly until all individuals have access to comprehensive, quality health care. WAR’s activities include:
- Support for Health Care Reform which guarantees quality health care for all.
- A Community Program which provides women in the local underserved communities of Harlem, Inwood and Washington Heights with tools to break down the economic, cultural and linguistic barriers to health care they face.
- Preservation of the Medicaid Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program which provides treatment options to uninsured and underinsured women who are screened for breast and cervical cancer through the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.
