Spasticity Management

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital offers a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the management of spasticity. Spasticity is a form of muscle stiffness and/or spasms that often affects individuals with a variety of neurological conditions. Individuals who have had a stroke, spinal cord injury, or traumatic brain injury, as well as those with Multiple Sclerosis and a variety of chronic neurological conditions may experience significant loss of function, reduced movement, and pain from spasticity.

A variety of treatments are now available to effectively treat spasticity, and a comprehensive approach to management is important to assure that the best treatment(s) are provided. We offer a full array of spasticity management services at both NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Treatment for spasticity may include:

• Physical and Occupational Therapy
• Serial Casting, Splinting, and Bracing
• Oral Medication management
• Botulinum Toxin Injections
• Phenol Injections
• Intrathecal Baclofen pumps
