Musculoskeletal and Orthopedic Rehabilitation
The physical and occupational therapy departments offer comprehensive biomechanical assessments and individualized treatment programs for patients with a variety of musculoskeletal impairments. Some common disorders treated include osteoarthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, sprains and strains, pain related to myofascial impairments or postural syndromes, back or neck pain and herniated disc repairs. We also treat a variety of sports injuries, knee pain and patellofemoral syndromes, meniscal tears, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repairs or reconstruction, plantar fasciitis, joint replacements, post upper and lower extremity fractures and surgical repairs, and rotator cuff tears or repairs.
After injury or surgery, patients are seen bedside and may be followed in the rehabilitation units or as outpatients by appointment. The goal of rehabilitation is to return the individual to a maximum level of function at home, work, and in the community. Highly trained therapists are certified in a variety of treatment interventions and advanced techniques and various types of equipment and apparatus are available for use. In addition, many of our physical therapists are APTA-certified orthopedic clinical specialists. Treatment interventions may include:
- Aquatic therapy
- Cardiovascular conditioning
- Comprehensive foot evaluations and orthotic prescription
- Ergonomic evaluation and instruction
- Functional re-training including balance and coordination
- Individualized strengthening programs
- Manual techniques such as massage, soft tissue and joint mobilizations
- McConnell taping techniques
- Neuromuscular re-education
- Patient and family education
- Postural training
- Spine rehabilitation
- Modalities such as biofeedback, heat, ice, electric stimulation, ultrasound, phonophoresis and iontophoresis
