Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a major, complex psychiatric illness and affects 1 percent of all Americans. There is no known single cause of schizophrenia. It is believed that a chemical imbalance in the brain is an inherited factor which is necessary for schizophrenia to develop. However, it is likely that many factors – genetic, behavioral, and environmental – play a role in the development of this mental health condition.

Comprehensive treatment is necessary and may include medications, individual and family psychotherapy, specialized educational and/or structured activity programs, and self-help and support groups. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital takes a multidisciplinary approach to the management of schizophrenia and offers inpatient and outpatient treatment to help patients and their families cope with this illness.
