Manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, is a type of affective disorder or mood disorder that goes beyond the day's ordinary ups and downs. It can become a serious medical condition and is an important health concern in this country. Manic depression is characterized by periodic episodes of extreme elation, elevated mood, or irritability (also called mania) countered by periodic, classic depressive symptoms.

The Anxiety and Mood Disorders Service at the Payne Whitney Clinic at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City offers comprehensive, individualized care for adults with bipolar disorder. Services include individual therapy, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and management of medications.
