The Women at Risk (WAR) Program is a research, education, and treatment program for women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors. Founded in 1991 by volunteers, patients, and physicians, the program conducts weekly support groups, educational seminars, a free lecture series on cutting-edge topics with experts in the field, an annual symposium on topics related to breast cancer, and an annual presentation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The WAR Resource Library, located in the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, offers patients and their families up-to-date information on prevention and early detection, empowering them with knowledge about the benefits of screening and helping to guide their decisions about care.
The WAR program also maintains a computerized registry of high-risk patients enrolled at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. The registry's goal is to accumulate and analyze data about women at high risk for breast cancer and to facilitate tracking and follow-up.
