Robert M. Ellsworth Ophthalmic Oncology Center

The Robert M. Ellsworth Ophthalmic Oncology Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center is the world's oldest and largest center for the diagnosis and treatment of eye cancer (retinoblastoma) in children . This Center's genetic counselor is assigned exclusively to retinoblastoma and is involved in the clinical management and education of patients. The Center is an active source of academic work, with more than 350 papers, book chapters, books, and audio- and videotapes published. In the past decade the Center has pioneered the use of peri-ocular chemotherapy to eliminate the need for systemic chemotherapy in retinoblastoma; pioneered the use of the Diopexy laser for treatment of retinoblastoma; developed a new classification scheme for extraocular retinoblastoma; and performed the world's first case of preimplantation genetic diagnosis for retinoblastoma. The role of a virus in causing some of these cancers has also been elucidated. The Center's director has been the principle investigator in a 20 year, prospective National Institutes of Health sponsored, multicenter, randomized clinical trial for ocular melanoma: The Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS). This study has already demonstrated that supplemental preoperative external beam radiation for large ocular melanomas that are to be enucleated is not needed; and that for medium sized melanomas, episcleral brachytherapy is as effective as enucleation for survival.
