Neurological Rehabilitation
The Rehabilitation Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital works closely with departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery to provide comprehensive assessments and individualized treatment plans for a variety of patients. The program treats patients suffering from:
- Stroke
- Neuromuscular disease
- Certain types of head trauma and spinal cord injury, and
- Brain tumors.
The multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, and physicians who are fellowship trained in neurological rehabilitation. Together they create an individualized treatment and recovery plan for each patient undergoing neurological surgery. The rehabilitation program provides treatment in all phases of care, including acute care, and in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation. In addition to accommodating a large number of patients on an in-patient basis, our program offers comprehensive outpatient services such as visual rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation, and cognitive rehabilitation. Among the therapeutic approaches offered are baclofen pump and constraint-induced therapy. NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell also has a spasticity management clinic that specifically treats patients with muscle stiffness due to brain and spinal cord injury.
NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia's multidisciplinary rehabilitation team offers comprehensive services in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and recreational therapy. Our physicians have specialized experience in all neurological aspects of rehabilitation, such as head trauma, neuromuscular rehab, spinal cord injury and stroke rehabilitation. Patients are visited by occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, and certified therapeutic recreation specialists bedside in the acute care hospital setting, in the rehabilitation unit, or as an outpatient. Our rehabilitation specialists are also actively involved with patients at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's Spine Center who suffer from back and neck pain with neurological causes.
