Headache

Although headache represents one of the most debilitating conditions in all of medicine, it remains one of the most under-treated. Headaches affect people of all ages, from children to older adults, and often product significant disability. At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, we believe that both recent-onset and longstanding headaches can be effectively treated, restoring patients' quality of life. The shared goal of our healthcare professionals is to identify the causes of each patient's headache and to design a program of care to relieve pain and restore function.

Our physicians offer comprehensive care to diagnose and treat headaches and facial pain in both children and adults. We customize the diagnostic process for each patient, taking a detailed medical history and performing a neurologic exam, and then suggesting brain imaging, neuropsychological assessment, and other state-of-the-art procedures as needed.

Treatment may include lifestyle modifications and/or medication, such as pain-relieving medication to be taken when the pain occurs, as well as therapies (both by mouth or by injection) that can prevent the pain from occurring. Patients may also be offered opportunities to participate in clinical trials of new treatments.

Our team has special expertise in the care of headaches in women and adolescents, those that occur during pregnancy and menopause, headaches associated with an increased risk of stroke, and migraines that can be prevented using botulinum toxin (Botox®). Treatment of a prolonged migraine headache by intravenous medications in one of our Neurology infusion centers can help patients with a severe migraine headache avoid a visit to the emergency room for relief of their pain.
