FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to like science to apply?
Yes! Lang Scholars are well-rounded young people with multiple interests. Although they all do not have to become scientists or doctors, they should have a keen interest in science and the natural world. They should also have an appreciation for the use of scientific skills and concepts to explore other disciplines or subject areas.
Do I have to become a doctor?
No! While we hope to cultivate an interest in the health sciences and professions, Lang Scholars do not have to become doctors or nurses. Our ultimate goal is to help our students become college-bound and fulfill their career aspirations.
Do I have to pay to participate in the program?
No! Lang Youth relies on philanthropy to sustain its operations and activities. There are no tuition fees.

Do I have to commit for all six years?
Yes! The only point of entry for the program is the 6th grade. We expect all of our Scholars to remain in the Program all six years and are committed to providing the support to facilitate this.
What are the admissions requirements?
Students who apply should: (1) attend a public middle school in Washington Heights or Inwood; (2) maintain an overall grade point average of 80% in the core subjects; (3) earn 3's and 4's in the state exams in English Language Arts and math; and (4) have good attendance. Those students who meet the admissions profile can submit an application, which includes two student statements, one parent statement, and two teacher recommendations.
What qualities are you looking for in a Lang Scholar?
We are looking for committed, motivated, and inquisitive young adults who are passionate about their education and are dedicated to developing as learners. Lang Scholars must exemplify the NYP and Lang Values of Empathy, Excellence, Innovation, Respect, Responsibility, and Teamwork and be active members of their community. Ideal candidates should have diverse interests, including a passion for science. They should enjoy experiential learning and sharing ideas with their peers.
