Enrichment Activities
Electives
(Fall & Spring, open to Phase I & II)
Weaved into the academic school curriculum, electives are two to three day workshops that take place on Saturdays. They give Lang volunteers and advisors the opportunity to teach non-science related topics that are fun and engaging. Electives are meant to contribute to the development of a set of skills or enrich our Scholars cultural competencies. The themes vary depending on the advisor's expertise. Past offerings have included: guitar, stock market, yoga, and Chinese language and culture.
Clubs
(Fall & Spring, open to Phase I)

It takes more than academic rigor to cultivate talented young professionals. With that in mind, extracurricular clubs were infused into the Lang experience. Clubs take fun, engaging, and often unconventional approaches to teaching or enhancing a subject area. They are a perfect complement to the educational goals and endeavors of the Lang Program, as they provide our students with a well-rounded educational experience. All Phase I students are required to participate in one club each year. Clubs meet once a week and have included: Newsletter, Girls Club, Young Male Scientists Club, and Book Club.
Retreats
(Fall, open to Phase I & II)
All cohorts attend annual retreats at the beginning of each academic year. At this time, students set their team goals for the year. They also continue to work on strengthening their team dynamic and improving their communication and collaborative work skills.
Incentive Trips
(Fall, Spring, and Summer, open to Phase I & II)

These trips allow Scholars, volunteers, advisors, and administrators to gather as a program and spend some time sharing together while doing something fun. There are three annual incentive trips – one each in the fall, spring, and summer sessions. These trips are recreational in nature and are a privilege for Scholars who are demonstrating a commitment to the program and successfully fulfilling their responsibilities.
Outward Bound
(Summer, open to rising 8th graders)
All rising 8th graders spend the first few days of their summer experience at Outward Bound – a program that aims to expose participants to some of the diverse cultures in New York City. In addition to absorbing the colorful and vibrant scene of our metropolis, Lang Scholars spend this time getting to know their new teammates, while learning important lessons on teamwork, sensitivity, and communication.
College Visits
(Fall, Spring, & Summer)

All Lang Scholars visit colleges during their six-year commitment to the program. Beginning with our rising 9th graders, Scholars are introduced to various college campuses with the intention of helping them see themselves as college-bound. In the summer preceding 9th grade Scholars spend a week at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in "academic boot camp." The goal of this experience is to prepare Scholars for the transition to high school in a well-respected collegial setting in order to underscore the significance of educational ambition and success. In preparation for the college application process, Lang Youth visits colleges in NY state (spring of 11th grade) and New England (fall of 12th grade). These trips allow students to learn about different types of colleges, meet representatives, and go on campus tours. The program subsidizes all costs for these trips.
New York City Explorers
(Summer, open to Phase I & II)
NYC Explorers is an optional club during summer program that takes Lang Scholars on multiple cultural trips throughout New York City. The goal is to expose Lang students to all the City has to offer. Students have done salsa dancing in Union Square, movie watching at Bryan Park, and kayaking in the Hudson. All programs are free of charge and are offered through various NYC organizations.
