Intravascular / Intracoronary and Intracardiac Ultrasound

Performed in conjunction with cardiac catheterization at NewYork-Presbyterian's cardiac catheterization laboratory, this invasive procedure uses high frequency sound waves, or ultrasound, to create images of the heart and coronary arteries from inside. The tiny ultrasound "camera" sits on the tip of a flexible catheter. Detailed IVUS images of both heart structure and function help to:
- Assure that a stent is correctly placed and guide the optimal expansion of the stent to improve its safety and efficacy.
- Clearly identify regions containing plaque, and distinguish these regions from normal tissue.
Intracardiac ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool that can be used to:
- Evaluate blood flow through the heart.
- Define the heart's anatomy in detail, thereby guiding placement of special patches that close atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale.
This technique provides a much more exact analysis of the artery and the amont of plaque that has accumulated. It also permits more precise visualization of damage such as clots and tears in the vessel wall.
At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are also working on the development of multiple other technologies that are similar to intracardiac ultrasound, which have much higher resolution and can also analyze the chemical composition of the arteries as well.
