Center for Autism and the Developing Brain

8. Adults Program

The adult program is designed to serve a variety of patients with ASD including the newly diagnosed. In addition to working individually with the adult to address any acute needs, we provide support to families, spouses, job coaches, and other support staff working with the adult in the employment or residential setting.

The overall goal is to identify or strengthen independent living skills to promote social interaction and adaptive functioning.

What goals are addressed?

Individual sessions are designed to support skills in the following key domains:

Exterior of the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain building

  • social interaction skills in the community and with family and peers
  • understanding of self and relationships-in context (social "rules")
  • leisure skills, home and community-based
  • identifying and strengthening job skills and behaviors
  • independence in organization and adaptive skills
What does the program look like?

The individual therapy program is set up in a module system that can be repeated or combined in a manner that best fits the current needs of the family and individual. Sessions occur in the home or community as needed. Problem-focused consultation to family members, residential advisors and/or job coaches is also offered. Social groups for adults include themed skill-building programs as well as support groups.
