Surgery at The Allen Hospital

The Department of Surgery at The Allen Hospital brings the world-class surgical skill and state-of-the-art techniques of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia closer to families in the Bronx, Northern Manhattan, and the surrounding communities. In addition to providing general surgery, the Department also houses practices for Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) and Plastic Surgery.

Surgeons at The Allen Hospital treat adults with a broad variety of diseases – from cancer to benign gastrointestinal disorders to traumatic and other emergency conditions. Drawing on the continuous research and innovations achieved at Columbia University, they perform a large volume of minimal access operations such as laparoscopic hernia repair, appendectomy, and colon surgery. Allen Hospital surgeons specialize in the treatment of all kinds of hernias and are expert in the repair of complex and recurrent hernias.

In addition, the Department of Surgery is a recognized Center of Excellence for the treatment of gallbladder diseases and is the most active referral center for the surgical treatment of gallstones in NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and in the New York metropolitan area. With 13 years of experience as a leader in performing and refining laparoscopic gallbladder removal, this center approaches almost all such procedures laparoscopically, with success rates that surpass any other institution in the area.

Geriatric Care

Geriatric care is another area of special surgical expertise. In concert with other clinicians at The Allen Hospital, the Department of Surgery provides surgical care for a large number of patients in their 80s and 90s, with excellent results. The Allen Hospital's screening and free health education programs, which promote prevention and early detection of colon cancer, gallstone disease, and other conditions, are widely attended and very popular in the community.

About Our Physicians

All Allen Hospital physicians are also on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of these physicians is on faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This means that patients experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while they are being treated in the intimate setting of a community hospital.
