The Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital brings the world-class surgical skill and state-of-the-art techniques of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center closer to families in Westchester County, the Bronx, northern Manhattan, and surrounding communities.

Surgeons at The Allen Hospital treat adults with a broad variety of diseases – from cancer to benign gastrointestinal disorders, to trauma and other emergency conditions. Drawing on the continuous research and innovations achieved at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, they perform a large volume of minimally invasive operations, such as laparoscopic hernia repair, appendectomy, and colon surgery. Surgeons at The Allen Hospital specialize in the treatment of all kinds of hernias, and are experts in the repair of complex and recurrent hernias.

In addition, the Department of Surgery is a recognized Center of Excellence for the treatment of gallbladder diseases, and is one of the most active referral centers for the surgical treatment of gallstones in the New York metropolitan area. With 13 years of experience as a leader in performing and refining minimally invasive gallbladder removal, this center approaches such procedures laparoscopically, with success rates that surpass other institutions in the area.

Geriatric Care

Geriatric care is another area of special surgical expertise. In concert with other clinicians at The Allen Hospital, the Department of Surgery provides surgical care for a large number of patients in their 80s and 90s, with excellent results. The Allen Hospital's screening and free health education programs – which promote the prevention and early detection of colon cancer, gallstone diseases, and other conditions – are widely attended and are very popular in the community.
