Radiology at The Allen Hospital
The Department of Radiology at The Allen Hospital provides diagnostic radiology services by board-certified radiologists on both an outpatient and inpatient basis. The Allen Radiology Division offers a wide range of imaging tests, including:
- CAT scan (Computerized Tomography or CT) is performed with a state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. CT at the Allen is done with the 160-row Toshiba Aquilion Premium Multidetector CT, which delivers the highest image quality. CT provides cross-sectional images of specific areas of the body. It offers three-dimensional reconstructions of the examined organs and is used for imaging the brain, neck, spine, chest, abdominal and musculoskeletal system. As a part of CT imaging, CT angiography (CTA) uses a contrast material to produce detailed pictures of blood vessels in key areas of the body.
- Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs and systems within the body. It allows physicians to view blood vessels, pelvic and abdominal organs, and the developing fetus.
- Nuclear medicine uses very small amounts of radioactive substances to examine organ function and structure. Nuclear medicine scanning is used mainly to clarify issues about the organs that cannot be fully evaluated with conventional x-ray images. Nuclear medicine helps to evaluate the condition of bones, liver, heart, lungs, brain, kidneys or endocrine system.
- X-rays, including fluoroscopy, used to generate images of the chest, musculoskeletal system, the gastrointestinal system, urinary tract, and other parts of the body. This is the most common diagnostic procedure.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field to visualize the structure and function of the body. MRI is particularly useful in neurological conditions, disorders of muscles and joints, for evaluating tumors, and showing abnormalities in the heart and blood vessels. Currently, patients have MRI scans performed at the main campus.
About Our Physicians
Radiologists at The Allen Hospital also serve on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers, and are on the faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. This means that patients at The Allen Hospital experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while they are being treated in the intimate setting of a community hospital. Because our physicians are affiliated with New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, our patients also have access to Columbia's advanced equipment if needed.
