Pulmonary at The Allen Hospital

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine is part of The Allen Hospital's Department of Medicine. Pulmonologists at The Allen Hospital treats adult patients with lung disorders including asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, pleural effusions (fluid in the lungs), pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and other conditions.

We treat adult patients afflicted with a whole spectrum of lung illnesses, from conditions that may just require an office consultation to patients with critical illness in the intensive care unit. Patients may receive pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopies, and other diagnostic procedures, as well as medical therapy and preoperative consultations.

Our board-certified doctors provide round-the-clock specialty care to patients in Northern Manhattan, Riverdale, Yonkers and West Bronx. Patients requiring surgical therapy are transferred to the Thoracic Surgery Service of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia.

About Our Physicians

All Allen Hospital physicians are also on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of these physicians is on faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This means that patients experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while in the intimate setting of a community hospital.

Our Physicians

• Manuel R. Cabrera, MD – provides office consultation and in-hospital care
• Anita Darmanian, MD – provides in-hospital consultation and critical care management in the Intensive Care Unit management
• John S. Schicchi, MD – provides management of critical illness in the intensive care unit and conducts basic science research in emphysema

Asthma Service

The Pulmonary Division also maintains a very active, specialized in-patient service for the care and education of adult patients with asthma. In our in-patient asthma unit patients receive specialty care by staff physicians, nursing staff trained in asthma care and are provided printed and personal asthma information and education.
