Psychiatry at The Allen Hospital
The Psychiatry Department at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital provides the full range of inpatient services for adults who are acutely ill with psychiatric disorders. The department's multidisciplinary approach combines the talents of psychiatrists, social workers, recreation therapists, nursing staff, and substance abuse counselors. The Department consists of two components: an adult inpatient unit and a consultation-liaison service.
The most common conditions we treat are bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and severe depression. Our program also offers specialized services for patients who have both mental illness and chemical dependency. The Allen Hospital has a multilingual staff and prides itself as being one of few U.S. centers that can provide services in Spanish to its Spanish-speaking patients and their families.
The Allen Hospital Psychiatry Department provides care to:
- Adult inpatients admitted voluntarily or who are referred by physicians or family
- Outpatients treated at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center who may require additional services as inpatients
- Adults admitted to our Emergency Department who require comprehensive psychiatric care on an inpatient unit
- Patients hospitalized at The Allen Hospital for medical/surgical/obstetrical conditions who also require psychiatric services
Progressive and Compassionate Care
Known for our proactive role in prevention and in avoiding unnecessary intervention, the department maintains a strong network with patients' families. Potential or additional problems are frequently preempted and managed maximizing the use of alternative/creative means, so that patients may not have to return to the hospital for treatment. When patients do require inpatient services, their stay averages 14 to 15 days, facilitating their readjustment to their community or home environment.
