Psychiatry at The Allen Hospital

The Psychiatry Department at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital provides the full range of inpatient services for adults who are acutely ill with psychiatric disorders. The department's multidisciplinary approach combines the talents of psychiatrists, nursing staff, social workers, recreation therapists, and substance abuse counselors. The Department consists of three components: an adult inpatient Psychiatry unit, a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry service, and brief Emergency Department consultation.

We are a teaching center for Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons medical students and residents in Psychiatry. Other professional trainees also have clinical rotations on our service, which fosters an academic and innovative environment.

We specialize in the treatment of psychotic and mood disorders, often in the setting of comorbid chemical dependency. The Allen Hospital has a multilingual staff and prides itself as being one of few U.S. centers that can provide services in Spanish to its Spanish-speaking patients and their families. At The Allen Hospital, translation is always available for all other languages as well.

The Allen Hospital Psychiatry Department provides care to:

  • Adult inpatients admitted voluntarily or who are referred by physicians or family
  • Outpatients treated at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center who may require additional services as inpatients
  • Adults admitted to our Emergency Department who require further evaluation and/or comprehensive psychiatric care on an inpatient unit
  • Patients hospitalized at The Allen Hospital for medical/surgical/obstetrical conditions who also require psychiatric services

Progressive and Compassionate Care

The management of crises is often challenging for patients and families. Known for our proactive role in prevention and in avoiding unnecessary intervention, the department maintains strong communication with patients' families. We work to identify and solve potential difficulties, maximizing the use of alternative/creative problem-solving, so that patients are stabilized and able to safely return to the community and their homes. Inpatient stays average 15 days, facilitating patients' readjustment to their home environment. We help connect patients with community resources.
