Return to Allen Hospital Home Page

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital is a full-service obstetric and gynecologic facility. We provide comprehensive gynecology services and care to some 2,400 women before, during, and after childbirth each year. For labor and delivery, we offer a family-centered approach to care from the moment the patient enters the Labor and Delivery Suite until she leaves with her baby.

We also offer treatment for a full range of gynecologic conditions to women in our community. We employ minimally invasive techniques whenever possible, such as hysteroscopy, endometrial ablation, and laparoscopy, to manage conditions such as:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Non-cancerous pelvic conditions.

Dedicated gynecologic ultrasound services are available to evaluate early pregnancies, gynecologic conditions, and pelvic pain. We also use an imaging technique called "saline-infusion sonohysterograms" to visualize the inside of the uterus.

Prenatal care can be provided by the patient's own physician, or NewYork-Presbyterian can provide care in our Farrell Clinic of the Family Medicine Department.

Labor and Delivery

The Allen Hospital's dedicated obstetric ultrasound unit provides comprehensive evaluation of fetal anatomy, fetal testing, and amniocentesis. If complications arise during pregnancy, our fetal assessment unit, which is staffed by maternal/fetal medicine specialists, provides accurate diagnosis and treatment. In addition, specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital are available around the clock to consult on high-risk cases. When needed, patients are transferred to Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, which has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 10 children's hospitals in the country.

Our Labor and Delivery Suite features:

  • An admission/triage area
  • Eleven labor and delivery rooms
  • Two surgical suites for C-sections.

Seven of our labor and delivery rooms are spacious, with private baths, and are used for labor and childbirth, while the other four are used for triage, antepartum care, and postoperative care. Patients have use of a kitchen area with a microwave, refrigerator, and ice machine. Our family-centered approach encourages an open visitation policy for family members, who are issued a hospital photo ID to facilitate access to the secure postpartum floor. Postpartum floors are equipped with a state-of-the-art wireless alarm system to ensure security of newborns. In most cases, babies are delivered by physicians with assistance from certified nurse-midwives, anesthesiologists, and neonatologists who are available on a 24-hour basis, if needed. Women at low risk of complications may have their babies delivered by midwives at their request.

Our department is also committed to medical education. Residents from Obstetrics, Family Medicine, the Emergency Department, and Anesthesiology rotate through Labor and Delivery.

After Delivery

We provide the following services for women who give birth at our hospital:

  • Individual inpatient teaching sessions with nurses
  • Inpatient classes on caring for newborns
  • Inpatient breastfeeding classes
  • A walk-in breastfeeding clinic after patients are discharged home
  • If needed, assistance from a social worker after the baby is born
  • Classes in Spanish and English
  • Free educational TV programs
