Neurology at The Allen Hospital

The Department of Neurology at The Allen Hospital provides neurological care on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, using the latest available equipment and laboratories. We are a general neurology practice, but our staff has subspecialty training in epilepsy, headache, stroke and neuromuscular disorders.

Our neurologists treat conditions including:

• Seizures (epilepsy)
• Migraines
• Strokes
• Alzheimer's disease
• Multiple sclerosis
• Parkinson's disease
• Spine problems
• Nerve damage that may present as numbness or weakness
• Neurological symptoms from conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disease

Laboratories and Equipment

The Neurology Department at The Allen Hospital has state-of-the-art laboratories with the latest equipment for neurological assessment during surgery. All patients undergoing spinal surgeries receive electrophysiological monitoring, so that their neurological status is continuously evaluated during surgery as well as in the ICU. This allows for early detection of potentially dangerous medical problems affecting the nervous system, facilitating optimum treatment.

The Neurology Department is also equipped to provide:

• Electromyogram (EMG) test to evaluate nerve and muscle function
• Nerve conduction testing for neuromuscular diseases as well as nerve damage or neuropathy
• Electroencephalogram (EEG) evaluation for seizures
• Evoked potential laboratory, to record the brain's electrical response to visual, auditory, and sensory stimuli
• Therapeutic modalities such as Botox injections for specific painful conditions, such as headache

The Neurology Department provides outpatient neurological consultations at The Allen Hospital, and has offices in Riverdale. We also provide certain nursing homes in the area with neurological care.

About Our Physicians

All Allen Hospital physicians are also on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major academic medical centers. In addition, each of these physicians is on faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This means that patients at The Allen Hospital experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while they are being treated in the intimate setting of a community hospital. If neurosurgery is required, patients are transferred to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia for further care. Pediatric patients usually receive treatment at the Pediatric Neurological Service at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian.
