Family Medicine at The Allen Hospital
The Family Medicine Department at The Allen Hospital provides comprehensive, primary medical care to adults and children in the Washington Heights and Inwood area. The Department is devoted to increasing access to primary care in our community and has adopted a far broader approach to care than is ordinarily found in primary care practices. This approach, called Community Oriented Primary Care, involves the assessment of community problems and development of appropriate interventions in conjunction with community members.
These include outreach and educational programs such as:
- Breastfeeding education programs
- Literacy program for children under age 5
- Smoking prevention programs in grade schools
- HIV education program for minority girls
- Peer mentoring program
The Department's primary care practice includes about a staff of about 35 and is comprised of physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, a nutritionist, social worker, and OB/GYN specialists. Together, we care for more than 25,000 patients each year with conditions such as high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, and pregnancy.

About Our Physicians
All Allen Hospital physicians are also on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of these physicians is on faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This means that patients experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while in the intimate setting of a community hospital.
Bertie M. Bregman, MD is The Allen Hospital's Chief of Service for Family Medicine.
