Emergency Medicine at The Allen Hospital
The Emergency Department at The Allen Hospital is open around-the-clock for residents of northern Manhattan, Riverdale and the Bronx who are in need of immediate medical attention. The Department is a 911-designated receiving hospital for adult patients and treats both adult and pediatric walk-in patients. Our modern facility is staffed with a dedicated team of physicians and nurses who combine skill and experience with compassion in providing outstanding emergency care to both adult and pediatric patients.
In addition, specialists in many areas of the hospital consult in the Emergency Department, including neurologists, orthopedists, general surgeons, obstetrician/gynecologists and neonatologists.
Our Emergency Department is newly renovated and expanded. It is a state-of-the-art emergency facility designed to enhance the quality and efficiency of care while providing a comfortable environment for both patients and their loved ones. It can accommodate more than 40,000 patients a year.
Special Features
Among the special features of this emergency department are:
- Chest Pain Center – This center, accredited by The Society for Chest Pain Centers, provides accurate and quick diagnoses as well as rapid and effective treatments to patients at risk for a heart attack.
- Pediatric Room – This child-friendly area is separate from the rest of the ED. (Children who require additional evaluation or hospital admission are transferred to the pediatric emergency room at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian or in the case of burns, to the Hearst Burn Center of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.)
- OB/GYN Rooms – Women with urgent pregnancy-related or gynecological problems are treated in one of these two special rooms.
- Asthma Room – This room is equipped to respond to the specific needs of asthma patients.
- Trauma Room – Its state-of-the-art equipment and close proximity to the ambulance bay enables immediate intervention for patients with life – or limb – threatening trauma.
- Stroke treatment with “clot-busting” drugs.
- Bio-Terrorism Decontamination Facility – This has been designated to handle and decontaminate patients who may have been exposed to an infectious or toxic substance.
- Cast Room – Patients with bone fractures or dislocations are treated in this room.
- "Fast Track" Area – This special area is specifically for patients with non-urgent medical problems.
About Our Physicians
All Allen Hospital Emergency Medicine physicians are also on the staff of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of these physicians is on faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This means that patients experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while they are being treated in the intimate setting of a community hospital. Because our physicians are affiliated with New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, our patients have access to Columbia’s advanced equipment when needed.
Leslie J. Miller, MD is The Allen Hospital's Chief of Service for Emergency Medicine.
