Emergency Medicine at The Allen Hospital
The Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital is open around-the-clock to serve adults and children from northern Manhattan, Riverdale, and other parts of the Bronx who need immediate medical attention. Our dedicated physicians and nurses combine skill, experience, and compassion to provide outstanding care in a setting that is comfortable for both patients and their loved ones. We deliver emergency care to more than 40,000 patients a year.
In addition, specialists from other areas of the hospital provide their skills to care for patients in the Emergency Department. These include neurologists (doctors who treat stroke and other disorders of the brain and the rest of the nervous system), orthopaedists (who treat problems of the muscles and bones), general surgeons, obstetrician/gynecologists (who deliver babies and care for women's reproductive needs), and neonatologists (doctors with special training in the care of newborn babies). Children who require more involved care or who need to be admitted to the hospital are transferred to the Alexandra & Steven Cohen Children's Emergency Department of NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.
Our Strenghts
Several special features are available at The Allen Hospital Emergency Department:
- Stroke Treatment: The Allen Hospital is a New York State-designated comprehensive Stroke Center. We provide immediate care for patients who have had a stroke. Our hospital received a Gold Plus Award in 2012 from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. This award recognizes our superior stroke care.
- Chest Pain Center: The Society for Chest Pain Centers has designated The Allen Hospital as a Chest Pain Center. Our staff quickly assesses chest pain and provides effective therapy for patients who are at risk for having a heart attack. Patients who need angioplasty and/or the insertion of a stent (a small mesh tube that holds open a narrowed or blocked blood vessel) and those who need heart surgery are referred to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.
- "Fast Track" Area: We care for patients with less urgent medical problems in our Fast Track Area. Patients here can be treated and released home more quickly. This also helps our staff focus on other patients with more urgent medical needs.
- Obstetric/Gynecology Rooms: Women who require immediate care for pregnancy-related or gynecological (reproductive) problems may receive treatment in one of two special rooms.
- Asthma Room: Asthma patients have specific medical needs. The Emergency Department features a room that is specially equipped to meet these needs.
- Trauma Room: Patients who have experienced severe trauma receive care in a special Trauma Room. This room has advanced equipment and is located very close to the bay where ambulances bring in patients, making immediate care possible.
- Bio-Terrorism Decontamination Facility: Patients who may have been exposed to an infectious or toxic substance can receive special care in a designated decontamination area.
About Our Physicians
All physicians at The Allen Hospital are also on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of our physicians is a member of the highly regarded ColumbiaDoctors faculty practice. This means that patients experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center, while being cared for in the intimate setting of a community hospital.
Lorna Breen, MD is The Allen Hospital's Site Director for Emergency Medicine.
