The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program
The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program is a federal and state funded nutrition education and supplemental food program. The goal of the program is to improve birth outcomes, support growth and development of infants and children, and promote long term health in all WIC participants.
The WIC Program at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is contracted to serve approximately 12,980 women, infants and children. The program is staffed with a team of Nutritionists, Breastfeeding Coordinator, Breastfeeding Specialist/Peer Counselor Coordinator, Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and support staff. Eligibility is based on documented nutrition and health risk conditions on a medical referral form; as well as proof of financial need (household income must be ≤ 185% of federal poverty guidelines based on family size). Participation in the WIC Program is available to the following categorically eligible groups:
- Women
Prenatal and post partum women (eligible up to their infant's 6 month birthday)
Breastfeeding women up to the infant's first year. - Infants (0-12 months)
- Children (up to age of 5)
WIC provides the following services and benefits:
- Group Nutrition Education
- Food Demonstration Classes
- Individual High Risk Counseling
- Breastfeeding Classes
- Breastfeeding Peer Counselor training
- Peer Counselor support for prenatal and breastfeeding women
- Hands-On Technical Assistance and Support for breastfeeding women at the Breastfeeding Help & Referral Center.
- Farmer's Market Nutrition Program - Checks to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables available July - September)
- Referrals for Health Insurance, Immunization, Prenatal Care and other services
- Healthy lifestyles program (fitness, food preparation and shopping tips)
WIC Food Package
The WIC food package is based on the nutritional needs and specific category of the participant and may include:
- Milk
- Juice
- Cheese
- Canned Fish (to exclusively breastfeeding mothers)
- Whole grains ( Brown Rice, Whole Wheat Bread)
- Infant formula
- Baby Foods (jarred)
- Beans and/or Peanut Butter
- Vegetables and Fruits
- Eggs
The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital WIC program has four WIC sites located in Washington Heights and Inwood communities. The program offers early morning as well as late evening appointments.
