About the Program
Areas of Study
The Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery Residency Training Program of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital provides residents with complete education in the comprehensive medical and surgical care of patients with diseases and disorders that affect the ears, nose throat, head, and neck. The educational program combines core basic science knowledge of otolaryngology and the communication sciences with the clinical aspects of diagnosis and medical and/or surgical therapy for related ailments.
Major areas include head and neck surgery, otology/neurotology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, allergy, skull base surgery, voice and swallowing, treatment of major vascular malformations, and endoscopic sinus surgery.
A monthly journal club reviews most of the current literature in otolaryngology. Thursday lecture series involves a comprehensive discussion of the basic and clinical sciences. Training courses in microvascular skills and facial plating are also offered to residents. There are many opportunities for residents to attend courses held in the tri-state area. All residents are encouraged to submit posters and presentations to national and regional meetings.
Rotations and Faculty
Each year, four trainees are selected, for a total of twenty residents in the five year program. The residency program involves one year of training in surgery and related specialties followed by four years of training in Otolaryngology/ Head & Neck Surgery. Approximately three months are allotted during the third year of training for clinical and/or basic science research. Residents spend time at four teaching hospitals: NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Centers.
There are over 36 full-time clinical faculty members in the program and over 55 affiliated and voluntary faculty that participate in the surgical, clinical and lecture settings.
Accreditation
The Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Upon successful completion of the program, residents are eligible for certification examination by the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABO). Many residents go on to fellowship training prior to entering academic or private practice careers.
