Biography

Dr. Francis Y. Lee specializes in bone tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic bone cancers, spine tumors, CT-guided radiofrequency ablation for osteoid osteomas as well as complex pediatric orthopedic surgery for developmental orthopedic disorders, limb lengthening and deformity correction. Dr. Lee and his clinical team provide excellent clinical care for complex orthopaedic diseases using state-of-the art technology including CT-guided radiofrequency ablation.

Dr. Lee is currently Vice Chair for Research, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery with Tenure, and Robert Carroll and Jane Chace Carrol Laboratories Professor. In 2009, The Board of Trustees at Columbia University awarded Dr. Lee with a Tenure appointment as an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in honor of his accomplishments as a clinician-scientist for the first time in 150 year’s department history. Dr. Lee is one of rare orthopedic surgeons whose research is supported by NIH and Department of Defense.

Dr. Lee serves as the Chief of the Tumor and Bone Disease service and is the Director of the Center for Orthopedic Research. He conducts both translational and clinical studies on musculoskeletal disorders. He is a recipient of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons/Orthopaedic Research Education and Foundation Clinician Scientist Traveling Fellowship Award and the AAOS Leadership Fellowship. He has been actively involved in professional committees for the AAOS, Orthopaedic Research Society, Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, NIH, AAOS Clinician Scientist Development Program, OREF Grant Writing Workshop, and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Question Writing Task Force. Dr. Lee is an effective mentor for medical students, residents, PhD candidates and fellows in the field of musculoskeletal research.
