RICHARD THALMANN
RICHARD THALMANN, RN
NURSING EDUCATION

Richard began his career at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital as a staff nurse in the Burn Center in 1990, after obtaining his BSN summa cum laude from Hunter Bellevue. Richard’s experience includes several years of clinical nursing in the Burn ICU and in the PACU.

Prior to beginning his nursing career, Richard graduated with a BA in Classics from SUNY-Buffalo in 1973. His career experience has been quite diverse. He has been an artist, a designer, a banker, and an English teacher. He is fluent in French and taught English for a year in Paris.

Richard joined the Department of Nursing Education in June of 1998 as an instructor for medical/surgical and critical care units. While working in Nursing Education, Richard has developed and updated curriculum; taught extensively, (including General Orientation, Basic Dysrhythmia, Critical Care, and specialty classes), and worked on numerous projects, such developing a policy and protocol for the assessment and management of pain.

Richard has also been actively involved with patient and family education. He has authored patient education materials including Burn Wise, a burn prevention learning module for the community (published in both English and Hebrew), and Managing Your Pain, a booklet available for all NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital patients.

Richard is highly regarded as a clinical expert and an outstanding instructor who is able to simplify highly technical content and infuse it with humor. Richard is also an avid learner and those he teaches benefit greatly from his dedication. Richard immerses himself completely in any project he undertakes, approaching it with passion and the highest of standards.

Richard has been described as a true “Renaissance Man.” He is true leader, but also a fine team player who shares his knowledge and experience with others. He is a humanitarian in the truest sense. He helps his community neighbors, and volunteers his time with groups such as the Silver Spoons program. Richard is a great role model, both professionally and personally, committed to excellence in all that he does.
