Maria Lombardi, RN
Pediatric Critical Care Nursing
Children's Hospital, CNIII
(Clinical Excellence Award)
Maria Lombardi has over a decade of experience in pediatrics and pediatric
intensive care nursing. Her certifications include Pediatric Critical Care
(Pediatric CCRN), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma
(TNCC). She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society
of Nursing. Additional memberships include the American Association of
Critical Care Nurses and the New York State Nurses Association.
Colleagues commend Maria for her outstanding clinical judgment and
sensitive patient-focused perspective. "Maria never lets us forget that in
the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the patient to be focused on is still
only a child." In the midst of performing advanced, very complicated care
procedures on desperately ill babies and children, Maria warmly
communicates compassion and interest. She comforts children who are often
too young or sick to express feeling homesick, frightened or confused.
An ardent supporter of education and quality improvement, Maria
consistently presents information to improve practice, and further the
professional growth of colleagues. Typical of her vision and
professionalism, Maria arranged for colleagues to attend a conference
devoted exclusively to the development of leadership skills. According to
one colleague, "Maria is about being part of the solution, and her
excellent solutions never leave anyone behind."
As a respected member of the Bereavement Committee, Maria works with family
members and staff to facilitate the difficult task of healthy grieving that
follows the loss of a child. Referred to as an extraordinarily effective
communicator, Maria forges bonds of hope and trust that endure well beyond
the Hospital experience.
