World Expert in Repair of Congenital Defects of Genitals and Urinary Tract

Dr. Kenneth I. Glassberg has been appointed director of the division of pediatric urology at Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and the Department of Urology at Columbia University College of Physicians Surgeons. Dr. Glassberg, an expert in congenital anomalies of the urinary tract and cystic diseases of the kidney, will establish a spinal bifida and incontinence center, a molecular biology research laboratory, and a pediatric urology fellowship.

Dr. Glassberg is uniquely qualified to lead this multifaceted pediatric urology program, says Cynthia Sparer, executive director of Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian. Through research and humanistic patient care, Dr. Glassberg is a champion for children to lead normal, healthy lives.

Dr. Carl Olsson, chairman of urology and J.K. Lattimer professor of urology at Columbia University College of Physicians Surgeons and director of the J Bentley Squier Urological Clinic at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, says, Dr. Glassberg is a leading authority on posterior urethral valves, a devastating congenital obstruction of the urinary tract, and hypospadias, a congenital deformity of the penis.

Children's Hospital offers patients state-of-the-art surgical repairs for genitaland urinary malformations and minimally invasive treatments of vesicoureteralreflux a condition in which urine backs up from the bladder toward the kidneysoften resulting in infections and laporoscopic surgery.

Dr. Glassberg, previously professor of urology and director of pediatric urology at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, has published journal articles on adolescent varicoceles the leading pediatric cause for later infertility in men as well as the etiology of congenital defects of the kidney and ureter. Dr. Glassberg has written numerous articles on the assignment of gender and reconstruction of infants with ambiguous genitalia, and has been the spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics on the topic. Dr. Glassberg is the author of more than 125 publications on topics spanning the full spectrum of congenital anomalies of the genitourinary system.

Dr. Glassberg received his medical degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, and interned at District of Columbia General Hospital, George Washington Division, in Washington, D.C.
