Unicompartmental Knee Replacement
Unicompartmental knee replacement is a partial procedure in which either the medial or lateral side of the knee is replaced, but not both. A small 2-3 inch incision is made, as opposed to the 8-12 incision normally required for traditional total knee replacement, because the instrumentation is much smaller. Only the diseased portion of the knee is removed, leaving the healthy part untouched. Surfaces of the patient’s bones are conserved, should total knee replacement be necessary in the future. This procedure results in a shorter hospital stay and shorter recovery time. Activity level, weight, bone quality and arthritis progression will determine one’s suitability for this procedure.
