Overview
The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the NewYork-Presbyterian Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health provides outstanding emergency care to ill and injured children and young adults, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take pride in offering our patients the highest quality pediatric emergency care in our state-of-the-art facility, and gratefully extend the borders of “our community” to all boroughs of New York City and the metropolitan area.
We offer a dedicated pediatric emergency department, separate from the adult emergency department, where children and families may be cared for in a comforting environment led by highly trained staff who specialize in pediatric care. Our patients benefit from our close relationship with the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the world-renowned NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, including direct access to our expert pediatric subspecialists and surgeons.
Our emergency care team includes:
- full-time physicians, trained and board certified/eligible in the subspecialty of Pediatric Emergency Medicine
- skilled emergency nurses, uniquely trained to care for children
- a certified Child Life Specialist, who has expertise in child development, child advocacy, and in promoting a family-centered experience
- emergency social workers, who offer support systems to patients in need
- patient care advocates, who ensure comfort and the highest satisfaction during the emergency visit
We are a Level One Trauma Center and a regional burn center, with coordinated teams highly skilled to manage children with these unique injuries.
Communication with parents is of vital importance to our hospital staff; families will find themselves surrounded by compassionate professionals who will keep them informed, guide them through a crisis, and facilitate appropriate follow-up. Rapid assessment and treatment of pain is a top priority for each and every patient. Ongoing quality improvement and staff education for pain management is an essential component of our service.
We also foster close relationships with community physicians and neighboring schools. Information and education on injury prevention, patient education, and advocacy is provided through numerous community outreach projects.
