Consider the following statistics, as they relate to the endocrine system:

  • According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, approximately 50,000 to 80,000 cases of acute pancreatitis occur in the United States each year.
  • Addison's disease, a rare disease that involves the adrenal glands, affects about 1 in 100,000 people, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
  • Cushing's syndrome, an adrenal gland disorder, affects about 10 to 15 people out of every million a year, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
  • Nearly 10 percent of the population has the type of immune system that can lead to Graves' disease, a condition that causes an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). However, only one out of 10 of those people actually develops the disease, according to the American Thyroid Association.
