Dr. David Roye Named 2009 Humanitarian of the Year by American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

David P. Roye, MD, Director of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, has been selected as the 2009 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Humanitarian of the Year Award winner. Dr. Roye, the St. Giles Foundation Professor of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, will be presented with the award at the AAOS Annual Meeting in February.

The AAOS Humanitarian Award recognizes Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons who have distinguished themselves through outstanding musculoskeletal activities in the United States or abroad. The AAOS defines a humanitarian as, "One who endeavors to improve the human condition through saving lives and alleviating suffering while supporting and contributing to the basic human dignity of those in need. A humanitarian:

• Gives of themselves regardless of compensation
• Provides services without expectation of remuneration
• Provides services to all equally, impartially, cooperatively and neutrally
• Embraces common moral decencies such as altruism, integrity, freedom, justice, honesty, truthfulness, responsibility and compassion
• Respects and embraces human diversity, and
• Improves the lives of those in need through selfless, courageous, creative and compassionate."

In commenting on the award, orthopaedic surgeon and colleague William N. Levine, MD, notes, "David has humbly and quietly been providing care internationally and locally to children in need for his entire career, and it is particularly gratifying to have our organization recognize his achievements with such a prestigious award. We are all so proud and grateful that he is a member of our Department and community."
