The Center for Advanced Digestive Care provides services to children with digestive disorders, primarily through the Phyllis & David Komansky Center for Children's Health, one of the nation's leading centers for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases. Our goal is to take care of the "whole" child, through a comprehensive understanding of how digestive disease affects not only a child's health, but their daily life as well.

Our pediatric digestive care program focuses on the specialized needs of children from infancy through adolescence and young adulthood. We offer the latest and most effective treatment options and preventive strategies to achieve the best possible outcome for every child in our care.

Collaborative, Team Approach

Our programs for children integrate the expertise of top-tier pediatric gastroenterologists and other supporting digestive specialists who work collaboratively to understand your child's illness, evaluate all relevant treatment options and develop a fully integrated, coordinated plan of care. Team members contribute at all levels to your child's recovery strategy - from diagnosis, through treatment, disease management and patient follow-up.

Patients also benefit from advances in electronic medical records, which allow team physicians to have immediate access to your child's medical record, including the ability to read test results, view x-rays and see medications prescribed.

The pediatric care team at the Center for Advanced Digestive Care, located in the Komansky Center for Children's Health, builds upon our world-class clinicians and physician scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The NewYork-Presbyterian Phyllis & David Komansky Center for Children's Health was named to U.S. News & World Report's 2011 "America's Best Children's Hospitals" Honor Roll. Only 11 children's hospitals in the nation were recognized with this distinction.

We're firmly committed to working closely with you through each step of the treatment process, offering support and resources to put you at ease and help you understand your child's illness. This family-centered approach allows you to be an active participant in your child's treatment plan.

Personalized, Coordinated Care

From your first contact with the Center, our Clinical Program Coordinators and Patient Navigators personalize and coordinate your child's care.

Clinical Program Coordinators are experienced nurses who answer questions you may have about your child's treatment, assist in scheduling diagnostic testing and appointments with specialists, and keep family members and referring physicians updated on your child's day-to-day progress.

Patient Navigators provide many special services for pediatric patients and their parents, including:

• Familiarizing parents with eligibility for outside services, such as arranging for home tutors, classroom note-takers and extra at-home textbooks
• Assisting with getting medications approved by insurance companies
• Directing families to educational materials and hospital-sponsored pediatric support groups

Child-friendly facilities

Child-friendly equipment and accommodations contribute to the atmosphere of healing, safety and security at the Center.

• Pediatric sedation unit with state-of-the-art equipment designed specifically for children
• Two fully-equipped procedure rooms designed with child-sized equipment
• Cheerfully decorated pediatric waiting room and recovery area
• Facilities for family members to stay overnight with their child

Special Services

Nutritional Assessment & Counseling

Mindful of the central role nutrition plays in treating and managing digestive disorders, Center physicians conduct a thorough nutritional assessment of all our pediatric patients, looking carefully at vitamin and nutrient levels, caloric intake, and overall wellbeing. Since many digestive diseases often occur before or during adolescence, we focus on correcting nutritional deficiencies essential to normal growth and development. Our nutrition team directs patients toward a sound diet and appropriate nutritional therapies often critical in the prevention or treatment of digestive disorders, as well as in recovery or healing following surgical procedures.

Genetic Counseling

Genetic evaluation and testing can help to make a definitive diagnosis in a child, as well as predict the risk for developing a digestive disease in future children or other family members. We perform a battery of molecular genetic tests on children with conditions that often have a familial tendency.  Improved understanding of genetics allows us to offer earlier intervention and more targeted therapies to children with a family history of these disorders, giving them the opportunity to build healthy lives. Genetic education and counseling help patients understand and cope with the results of genetic tests.

Transition Care

In many cases, your child's illness is a diagnosis that will require lifelong vigilance, special care, and follow-up.

As a way to initiate a pathway to self-sufficiency and assist patients in taking charge of their condition as young adults, the Center has developed a program that begins during adolescence. Working in partnership with our patients, we facilitate transition from pediatric to adult-centered healthcare. We introduce patients to their new physicians and specialists; help them understand the critical importance of keeping up-to-date with therapies and appointments; and provide them with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make responsible decisions affecting their care.

School & Child Life Services

Because we know that any hospitalization brings with it anxiety and stress, we have several programs designed to address your child's emotional and educational needs and help make the hospital stay for patients and families less intimidating.
